#1. Milton District HS
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Scott, Bronte Meadows, Old Milton, Timberlea, Dorset Park, Dempsey, Clarke
SCORE: 7.3/10
PREVIOUS RANK: #1
Milton District High School is now Milton’s oldest high school with its founding dating back to 1960. This is also the graduation place of famous Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield!
And speaking of reaching for the stars, it’s once again Milton DHS that tops the list of the best public high schools in Milton! This year Milton DHS once again improved its scores and retains their spot at the top of the rankings.
Beyond the test scores, Milton DHS describes itself in four keys ways:
- A caring, inclusive school culture
- A dynamic, collaborative community of learners
- A strong commitment to student voice & leadership
- A clear focus on experiential learning
These are four really core and important values. In terms of experiential learning, students have built townhomes and portables, created inspired art from local scenery, paddled Algonquin Lake and explored Petroglyphs Site just to name a few. These experiences help embed deep learning and create lasting impressions on students.
Milton DHS offers the following Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) programs:
- Arts & Culture
- Construction
- Engineering/Robotics & Manufacturing
- Health & Wellness
- Music & Audio Production
- Social Justice & Transportation.
Milton DHS also has other specialty programs including a Gifted program for Grade 9 and 10 students, an Advanced Placement and Co-op programs for Grade 11 and 12 students. These all give students the ability to learn at a different pace and gain valuable hands-on experience.
Beyond the classroom, Milton DHS also has over 35 clubs and multiple sports available for students. Pretty much any kind of club you can imagine is on offer at Milton DHS and if you have an idea for a new club, the school goes out of its way to make it happen.
As for its catchment area, Milton DHS covers essentially the entire northern half of Milton north of Derry Road. This is a very large catchment area with any kind of home and price point available. It’s also home to many top elementary schools making it a great overall school zone.

#2. Craig Kielburger
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Coates, Cobban, Beaty, Bowes
SCORE: 6.7/10

Opened in 2012, Craig Kielburger Secondary School (CKSS) is named after the Canadian activist who became famous as a teenager for creating a charity foundation focused on stopping child labour around the world.
And this year the school retains its spot at #2 in the rankings after another solid year! But, beyond just the test scores, CKSS offers a wide range of programs to suit a diverse group of students.
The school provides many specialty programs including French Immersion, an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and technology courses including:
- Auto Body
- Construction
- Cosmetology
- Computer Sciences
- Photography
- Visual Arts
CKSS offers the following Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) programs:
- Transportation
- Green Industries
- Hospitality
- Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
- Arts and Culture
- Social Justice
CKSS also offers programs related to Skilled Trades, Co-operative Education and Special Education.
They also have an incredible drama program and an award-winning music vocal group. They also have tons of unique clubs, sports teams and charity organizations for students to explore and participate in.
As for its catchment boundary, CKSS is the school for the southeast Milton neighbourhoods of Coates, Beaty, Cobban and Bowes. It’s located in Milton’s newest neighbourhoods, so there are plenty of great, new homes to explore surrounded by major retail and huge parks.

#3. Elsie Macgill HS
NEIGHBOURHOOD: Harrison, Willmott, Ford, Walker
SCORE: 6.0/10
PREVIOUS RANK: #3
Elise MacGill Secondary School, Milton’s newest high school, opened midway through the 2021/22 school year in southwest Milton.
The school stays at #3 hitting just at the provincial average over the last 3 years. This is quite normal for new schools. Growing pains as they say.
The school was named after Elsie MacGill who was the first woman to earn a Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, the first practicing Canadian woman engineer and the first female aircraft designer.

The 153,000sq.ft school has a triple gymnasium, learning commons, and a design and technology learning room that host the school’s I-STEM (Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program. The I-STEM program is one of only three schools offering this dynamic program in the Halton Board.
The school also acts as a Community Pathways Program Hub that includes four classrooms, a common kitchen area, and sensory rooms that provide a relaxing and stimulating learning environment.
Elsie MacGill offers the following Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) programs:
- Energy
- Health & Wellness
As a new school, Elsie MacGill only has two SHSM programs, but I expect more to be added in the near future.
As for the catchment boundary, it includes Milton’s southwest neighbourhoods of Harrison, Willmott, Ford and Walker. These are also home to some of Milton’s newest homes. You also have the wonderful Milton Community Park in Willmott and nearby access to Milton District Hospital.
