The housing in Central pairs with its neighbour, Old Oakville (where Downtown Oakville is located), to provide the absolute premium experience for life in Downtown Oakville.
Like its neighbours, Burlington and Mississauga, the Oakville waterfront is where you’ll find the most expensive homes in the city. However, it’s the original homes and charming customs in the rest of the Central that really help define it.
Finally, on either end of the northern and southern borders (Speers and Lakeshore) you’ll find some modern low-rise (and a couple of higher-rise) condo options for anyone who wants low-maintenance, but amenity-rich living.
Let’s take a look at three different pockets within Central:
West of Kerr Village
West of Kerr Village you’re going to find mostly 50s and 60s-built bungalows, 1.5 storey, raised bungalows and 2-storey homes mixed in with gorgeous custom-built homes. Lots are at a premium here and every year older, smaller homes are being torn down for large custom ones.
Here’s an example of an original home from the 1950s. It’s been owned for over 60 years by the same couple.
If you take a look around that street, you’ll see the pride the old-timers have with their lush green lawns and flowers in the front yard. Next to most of them will be large, custom-built homes that are reshaping the neighbourhood.
You also do notice that this pocket is significantly less green compared to the pocket east of Kerr Street especially in the northwest corner. As you head south towards Lakeshore though that begins to change.
There are also small pockets of low-rise apartments and older condo townhomes peppered through this area. The entire neighbourhood, like the vast majority of Oakville, is well-kept and manicured.
East of Kerr Village
As you head east of Kerr Village you’re immediately met with many more low-rise apartments and older, original-owner homes.
It’s really once you cross east of Queen Mary Road towards Sixteen Mile Creek that the streets widen, the trees grow in larger numbers and the properties get bigger with lots of custom infill on large lots. This is a really gorgeous spot to own and live.
How gorgeous are these streets?!
South of Lakeshore
This is your “cottage in the city” pocket. It’s essentially an extension of Old Oakville next door where you’ll find a mix of original homes and absolutely charming custom builds that can date back to the 1970s.
This one in particular is a 2017 custom – I personally love these ones!
Finally, you have the enormous estate properties on the water that only the richest people in Canada can afford.
Along with Old Oakville, this is THE premium spot to be in the city to be within easy walking distance to Downtown Oakville.
