Top 5 Elementary Schools in Guelph

Check out the scores and profiles of the best elementary schools in Guelph in our “Top 5 Elementary Schools in Guelph” feature story.

There is always lots of jockeying for positioning but once again Edward Johnson PS takes the crown for the best public elementary school in Guelph. However, every year there are challengers that are consistently rising and pushing these schools to perform their best. Check out the full list below!

1. EDWARD JOHNSON PS (JK-6)

Edward Johnson Public School is located in the neighbourhood of General Hospital in the North End of Guelph. Edward Johnson, aka, L’Ecole Edward Johnson, has been far and away the top school in Guelph for a number of years now and again maintain its stranglehold on the title with an overall pass rate well over 95%. In fact, Edward Johnson has been rated as one of the best schools in all of Ontario.

The bad news? Edward Johnson PS is a JK-6 French Immersion school. That means that getting access to it will be very difficult as enrollment is already high and there are ongoing capacity issues making it tough to get access to the full-time French Immersion school.

The good news is if you can manage to get access to the school, home prices in the North End are very affordable!

Edward Johnson is one of Guelph's most famous people. He was an internationally recognized opera singer and his later years served as Chairman of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

2. FA HAMILTON PS (JK-6)

FA Hamilton PS is located in the neighbourhood of Kortright West in the south end of Guelph. FA Hamilton does not have as long a history as Edward Johnson as it began as an English-track school in 1990. However, when French Immersion boundaries changed due to an increasing demand in Guelph, FA Hamilton was converted to JK-6 French Immersion school in September 2011.

They certainly haven’t missed a beat and are now the #2-ranked school in all of Guelph. This has become a school that many parents aim to send their children. They’ve certainly lived up to the famous educator that the school is named after! This is a great choice for those parents interested in full-time French Immersion.

3. JOHN MCCRAE PS (JK-8)

John McCrae PS is located in the neighbourhood of Old University just minutes from both downtown Guelph and the University of Guelph.

The pride of Old University, Ecole John McCrae is the 3rd full-time French Immersion school to crack the Top 5 in Guelph. Many young families are moving into the area in order to get access to this fantastic school.

Named after the soldier, physician and now internationally famous poet who penned “In Flanders Fields”, John McCrae became a full-time French Immersion school in September 2003. Situated on the beautiful Speed River, Ecole John McCrae comes in at #3 in our rankings of Guelph’s best elementary schools. Serving a large population of over 600 students from JK-8, Ecole John McCrae makes the Old University neighbourhood a very desirable option for those looking to call Guelph home.

4. RICKSON RIDGE PS (JK-8)

Rickson Ridge PS is located in the neighbourhood of Kortright West in the south end of Guelph. Rickson Ridge PS had an incredible run last year to put themselves into the Top 5 elementary schools in Guelph. In fact, it’s even more of an honour since Rickson Ridge PS is the only non-French Immersion school to crack the Top 5.

With the influx of population in Guelph over the last few years and new schools opening in other parts of the south end, Rickson Ridge will be losing some of its Grade 7 & 8 population, but I think the school and programs will be fine and continue to produce some of the best results in the city.

5. VICTORY PS (JK-6)

Victory PS is located in the neighbourhood of Downtown Guelph near Exhibition Park and has a long and storied history dating back to 1919. Today, it serves as the area’s French Immersion school and comes in at #5 in public elementary schools in Guelph.

Victory is a dual-track school. Its English track runs from JK-6 and its French Immersion track runs from JK-4. It is the only dual track school in the Top 5.

Guelph resident Doug Stephens said it best about Victory PS – “Victory Public School remains a shining example of a historically significant, heart of a neighbourhood community.”
